Vintage Guitar Amplifiers Made for Sweet SoundsJuly 9 , 2009Staco Energy has helped a premier supplier of vintage guitar amplifiers to bring unmatched, high quality sounds for speaker systems. Mojave Ampworks has been building high end tube guitar amplifiers for the last six years, evolving from an amplifier “counter parts restoration business”. Tube guitar amplifier products are highly sought after for guitar players, due to the natural sounds that are created. Mojave’s latest product is a 120vac unit, “Dirty Boy”, featuring 100 watts of performance. One of the unique sound benefits of early vintage guitar amplifiers and modern amplifiers built on the same platform is the unmatched tone and clarity, when the amps are driven to their full capacity. This will create an AC electrical power supply sag, with overload sounds that are desired. Typically, there are two methods to allow amp overload at full power and reduced volume. The first is known as an attenuator, which simply "soaks" up power created by the amp and delivered to the speaker. The result is less power to the speaker and lower volume. The side effect is flat and compressed tone and quality. The second it to use variable transformers, which permit the “throttling” of the AC power into the amplifier, reducing the output power. The sound is much more natural and has no real side effects. “The variable transformer is a quasi "trade secret" of professional guitar players, who often recorded or performed live with older guitar amps”, stated Victor Mason, Mojave Sales and Operations Director.”
A basic Staco variable transformer consists of a single layer,
magnet wire winding on a toroidal core of laminated silicon
steel. A carbon brush connected to an output lead is
rotated over a precision ground, gold plated commutator track
to tap off voltage at any turn from zero to the maximum output
voltage of the winding.
